Cheque Clearing FAQ
Clearing
Cheque Truncation System
All banks in Singapore have implemented the online image-based cheque clearing system known as the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) for SGD and USD cheques. Once deposited, the cheque is scanned and its electronic image transmitted through the entire clearing cycle, instead of the physical cheque itself.
With the implementation of CTS, when a cheque is dishonoured, an Image Return Document (IRD) is generated and sent to the payee. This IRD is a legal substitute for the dishonoured cheque.

5 Day Clearing Week
The Singapore banking industry has moved to 5-day clearing week with effect from 15th May 2006. Hence, participation in USD and SGD clearing and availability of funds thereon is possible from Monday to Friday only. This means that on Saturdays, customers’ accounts cannot be credited or debited with cheques, GIRO or Interbank funds transfers.

Clearing Timing
The cheques can be deposited in the Quick Cheque Deposit Boxes provided in our branches. To know the timing of clearing and funds availability on cheques deposited for clearing, please contact our branches.

What is Image Return Document (IRD)?
Under CTS, when a cheque that you have deposited into your account is returned unpaid, you will receive an Image Return Document (IRD) instead of the cheque. The IRD serves as a notice of dishonour and replaces the original cheque for the purpose of re-presentment for clearing under CTS. It is a legally recognized replacement of the original cheque for re-presentation.
